Laughter in the Rain

I remember a girl I really liked.

One time I visited her in Europe. We travelled a beautiful island in Northern Germany. It was so memorable, but I was also feeling a bit sad because I knew we wouldn’t be able to see each other too often as I was going to be living 8 time zones away from her.

On the final day of the trip, she took me to this lovely restaurant by the sea for lunch. It was a very popular place. Even though we avoided the peak time, tables were all taken when we arrived there.

After waiting for a half an hour or so, we finally got a terrace table for two. But as soon as we settled in the seats, the sky started pouring. At first I thought it was rain, but then it turned into hail.

“Oh my god!”

We ran into the inside of the restaurant. We were soaking wet, and it was freezing cold. I was about to swear because I was wearing my favourite summer dress and took an hour to put on a perfect make-up. Now I looked like a miserable tourist.

Suddenly, she started to laugh. I looked at her.

“I’m sorry, but… look at us! We look… so…terrible!” She laughed as if our situation was some kind of comedy.

“Yeah.” I started to laugh, carried away with her laughter. My anger has gone. After all, it was no one’s fault– it was just a series of bad luck. What could we do with it aside of laughing about it?

That moment I was deeply impressed by her positive attitude. I knew she was also feeling disappointed to have such a bad weather at our last lunch. But she turned the misery into something we could laugh about.

After half an hour, the sun came out and the sky was cleared as if nothing has happened.

We could finally see a beautiful shoreline as we got back to the table.

“It was such a memorable lunch,” I said to her.

“Yes, it was!” She smiled.

I haven’t seen her since then. But I believe she is doing all right with her positive mindset and gorgeous smile. .
